We recommend you get professional dental cleanings at least once a year. During that cleaning, the dentist will also do a thorough examination of your entire mouth. They will check for dental issues, injuries, cavities and other general things that contribute to your overall oral health. Schedule your dental exam today by contacting us at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles.

The most important step for upkeep on your oral health is daily flossing and brushing. However, you will still need a dental professional to take a look at your mouth and ensure you have good oral health. Dental exams are of utmost importance because they are done by professionals who are able to catch issues with your mouth and teeth long before you even feel the effects. Furthermore, this allows your dentist to find issues in your mouth that will further prevent a variety of dental issues. Getting your teeth examined by professionals will prevent cavity, gum disease and many other serious dental conditions.

Professional cleaning

As stated, before the professionals at your dental office examine your teeth and mouth, they will first do a deep clean. This allows them to remove plaque and tartar from your gums and teeth and check for any maldevelopment. A dental hygienist will use a scaler to scrape plaque and tartar from your teeth and away from your gums. Then they will brush and floss your teeth. Next, a dentist will visit and discuss your oral health with you. The dentist may also do some cleaning if they notice any debris remaining. Lastly, they may administer a fluoride treatment depending on what the dentist sees.

X-Ray and examination

After the dental team examines and cleans your mouth, they will often recommend dental x-rays. These are recommended as part of your exam and on a routine basis. Dental x-rays allow the dentists to check for correct dental placement and alignment. This will show areas of your mouth that are impossible to see with the naked eye. Before you receive an x-ray, the dental team will cover your chest and neck with protective lead padding that prevents you from experiencing unnecessary radiation. Then, they will place a piece of plastic in your mouth for you to bite on. This helps to align the x-ray and keep it in focus. You will receive an x-ray on both sides of your mouth.

The remainder of the examination will consist of the dentist discussing the results with you. You will have time to talk about any additional concerns you may be experiencing. The dentist will do one final exam of your entire mouth to check for any other issues. They will also check for signs of oral cancer during this time.

Oral cancer screenings are done for all patients as part of the general examination and consists of an exam of the teeth, tongue, gums and cheeks. In person, our dentist will explain this examination in more detail as well as the results. The dentist will address your concerns or questions and provide you with further instructions on how to care for your teeth at home.
