Tooth extraction is very common and after the tooth is extracted, you will need to have a replacement for the area the tooth was removed. Common procedures involve dentures and partials or bridges. However, dental implant restoration is a fantastic alternative to these that gives you a more natural look and function.
Dental implants are sometimes placed on the same day as your dental extraction but they can also be placed in an existing empty space where a tooth to be. Procedures for dental implants can vary slightly from one person to the next. Your dentist will give you more information about dental implants and the dental implant materials used, when you schedule an appointment by contacting us at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles.
Why are they important?
It is possible to function relatively normal after you have lost a tooth. However, you will always experience at least some function loss when a tooth is extracted. Dental implants help to restore this function and are a preferred alternative to dentures or bridges in many cases. These implants make it easier for you to eat and talk after your tooth extraction. They also have aesthetic appeal as they are made to resemble your natural teeth very closely. In general these are reliable and have a very high success rate.
Types of dental implants
There are two styles of dental implants that patients can receive: subperiosteal and endosteal. Subperiosteal implants are located underneath the gum and do not penetrate the jawbone. These are used when you have a jawbone that is not able to support implants due to injury, damage or decay.
Endosteal implants are similar, except these do penetrate the jawbone. They are made of titanium and have a small screw shape. This is the most common type of dental implant.
Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants
Dental implants are the most effective solution to tooth replacement problems. Whether you face a tooth decay problem or lose some of your teeth in an accident, you can restore your lost smile in a few months' time. Deepika M. Reddy, DDS and at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles recommend dental implants to restore your carefree eating practices.
Procedure
The entire procedure from start to finish will require multiple appointments. To begin, your dentist will take digital x-rays or other types of diagnostic images and impressions of the jaw and teeth. This lets them closely examine your mouth structure to determine if your jaw can support implants. Bone augmentation, ridge expansion and sinus lifts can be done if you would like to have endosteal implants but cannot currently support them. This will require more time in the office.
Bone augmentation is the restoration or replacement of parts of your jawbone. A ridge expansion is the use of bone grafts to create space above the jaw. Sinus lifts are used when you are missing your upper back teeth. This adds bone structure below the sinuses.
For the surgery, your dentist will administer general anesthesia to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable. Then, they will make a small incision into your gum to expose the bone. They will drill holes to create a location for the dental implant post which is a metal material. The jawbone needs to grow onto the implant, which can take a few months.
Once your jawbone has grown over the implant, you will come in for the placement. Your dentist will administer local anesthesia and make another incision into the gum. They place the abutment, which is the support that the artificial tooth attaches to. A few weeks later, we will take impressions so that an artificial tooth can be made. Once it is complete, your dentist simply attaches it to the abutment.
Your dentist will explain how to take care of the dental implants and what to do after each procedure. Do not forget to ask any questions, because how you take care of your dental implants is of utmost importance to your recovery. Please contact Cherry Hill Dental Smiles by calling 856-667-3737 today.
