Fillings are made to protect your teeth and restore normal functioning that may have been lost through the condition you have. Your dentist will work with numerous types of fillings, explain what each of them are and help you decide on which material to use. Schedule your dental filling by contacting us at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles.

Why are they important?

Fillings are important because they help repair damage from tooth decay and also prevent further dental issues. They can also help to restore your teeth and give them a more natural look. Depending on the location, we will decide the material used. Some blend perfectly with your existing teeth and others do not resemble normal teeth but are stronger. Your dentist will recommend a certain material based on the intended function.

A cavity or tooth decay can be painful and cause an infection that can spread to areas of your body outside of your mouth. Furthermore, they can be a negative aesthetic but often, the reason you would fill your tooth or get a filling has to do with the physical discomfort. Fillings also prevent bacteria from getting into your other teeth and creating more infection. Additionally, they will cover exposed nerves or tissues in the teeth that are very sensitive and allow you to drink and eat without experiencing pain. Tooth decay also affects how the teeth function. For example, some people will have trouble drinking, breathing, or eating if they have a severe issue or rotting of the teeth. Fillings will alleviate the pain caused by said issues and allow you to live a normal life again.

Material

Fillings occur for a multitude of reasons, so of course, there are various materials available. Each different material has different benefits and negative factors. Your dentist will discuss these benefits and issues with you before doing any permanent work. These things affected are the durability and longevity of the filling as well as the look and color of the tooth.

There are five common types of material used for fillings. They are: glass ionomers, gold, composite and ceramic. Composite is a mixture of fine glass and plastic which closely resembles the tooth and binds directly to it. Ceramic, also called porcelain, matches the natural teeth and is stain resistant. However, they are more expensive and brittle than other materials. They are more for aesthetic value. Gold fillings are incredibly strong and durable, but they are also very expensive and do not blend with the natural tooth. Glass ionomer is a mixture of fluoroaluminosilicate (a component of glass) and acrylic. These do not perfectly match the teeth, but they are not nearly as noticeable as amalgam or gold. This is a very strong material that is typically used in the case of severe tooth decay.

Procedure

Fillings take about an hour to complete. The dentist will do a consultation and discuss the different materials and what they will be doing inside of your mouth. Then, the dentist will take an x-ray before the procedure and most likely administer anesthesia. If the condition is mild, you may not need any anesthesia. After the tooth and gum are numb, the dentist will drill out the decayed material from your tooth. They will fill the hole (cavity) with the previously selected material. This material will set very quickly. You will be given a more specific timeline when you visit the office.

After the procedure, you will receive instructions on how to care for your filling which is crucial to follow. Please contact Cherry Hill Dental Smiles by calling 856-667-3737 to schedule your dental exam. We can take care of all your dental filling needs.
