Cleanings
Cherry Hill, NJ

Mom and daughter smiling while brush the teeth in the bathroom at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles in Cherry Hill, NJ 08002-1252<br title='b11'>Brushing and flossing on a daily basis is one of the most important steps to keep your teeth clean and healthy. This is a simple step that you can accomplish by yourself at home and will limit the amount of time you spend in the dentist’s office. The second most important step is to get your teeth professionally cleaned at least once every year. Regular cleanings help to prevent enamel decay and other more serious health problems associated with bad oral hygiene.

Although brushing and flossing is one of the most important ways to keep your mouth healthy, you will still need professional cleanings regularly to maintain good oral health. It is recommended that you visit your dentist’s office twice a year for regular cleanings. The reason is that professional cleanings provide you with treatment that is impossible to achieve at home because it prevents plaque and tartar build-up which eventually prevents other more serious oral health conditions such as periodontitis or gingivitis. Schedule your dental cleaning by contacting us at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles.

How it works

When you arrive at the dentist’s office, the dental hygienist will first do a physical examination of your entire mouth. They will use a small mirror to look inside your mouth and check for any signs of tooth decay or gingivitis. Then, the dental hygienist will clean your teeth using a process called scaling. Scaling is when a professional uses a little tool (called a scaler) to scrape the plaque and tartar off your teeth and away from your gums. Scalers are quite sharp, meaning you may hear a scraping sound, but that is completely normal.

After the hygienist scales your teeth, they will brush them with an electric toothbrush specifically designed to clean your teeth. The brush is circular and is designed to brush each tooth individually with the utmost efficiency. Your dental office will use toothpaste that tastes and feels exactly like normal toothpaste, except it has a gritty texture, this is a fluoride treatment. This texture is needed in order to gently scrub your teeth and remove everything that is not necessary. It is safe to use twice a year by a trained professional but being rough with your teeth at home will only remove important enamel. Finally, a dental hygienist will use a type of water syringe to rinse your mouth completely after the cleaning.

After a dental hygienist finishes cleaning your teeth, they will then floss your teeth professionally. Although you should be brushing and flossing twice daily at home, this professional cleaning and flossing will ensure all the bad bacteria and debris is fully removed. After the dental hygienist will allow you to rinse your mouth by yourself with water.

Dental examination

Next, a dentist will examine your entire mouth and all of your teeth. They will check for cavities, injuries, maldevelopment or any serious oral health concerns. You will have time to ask the dentist questions or tell him/her about any symptoms you may be experiencing. Furthermore, the dentist may do some light cleaning if they notice any areas that have plaque leftovers.
