Bridges
Cherry Hill, NJ

Rendering of jaw with dental bridgeDental bridges are false teeth that fill in gaps between natural teeth. This can be because one or more teeth are missing or one was extracted due to rotting, decay or gum disease. The surrounding teeth will provide a structure for the dental bridge to hold in place. Dental bridges have aesthetic and functional value. You have several kinds of dental bridges available and these are constructed of different materials. Your dentist will discuss the options on the table when you schedule your dental bridge consultation by contacting us at Cherry Hill Dental Smiles.

Why are they important?

There are multiple options for restoration when you lose a tooth. Dental bridges have many benefits over the other alternative. Dental bridges will look strikingly similar to your natural teeth and can provide a few functions for you. They will also allow you to talk and chew without difficulty and ensure that your bite is even so you will not experience any further damage. Furthermore, they will provide aesthetic value for your smile and entire mouth’s health as a whole.

Types of dental bridges

There are many materials that can be used to bridge the gap in your teeth. The build of the dental bridge will determine how long it will last and the durability of it. You can expect the dental bridge to last 5 to 15 years depending on how you take care of it and the material that is used.

Gold and porcelain are the most common materials used to make dental bridges. Gold is more durable than porcelain but is much more expensive and does not match the color of your existing teeth. If the look of your smile is the most important factor, porcelain is the best choice since it will easily match your natural teeth. However, porcelain does have a shorter lifespan than gold and you will have to be more careful with it.

There are four types of dental bridges available. They are traditional, Maryland, cantilever and implant-supported. The placement method is the difference between these types. Traditional bridges are supported by dental crowns that have been cemented to the adjacent teeth. Maryland bridges have a porcelain or metal framework that bonds to the back of the adjacent teeth, rather than having a crown for support. Cantilever bridges use crowns and dental cement for support but are cemented to a single adjacent tooth. Implant-supported dental bridges have dental implant support which requires surgery. Your dentist will discuss which bridge is right for you after an examination.

Procedure

Based on the type of dental bridge you and your dentist choose will decide many of the procedural processes. Traditional bridges are the most popular choice. Implant-supported bridges are the least popular but the most supportive. Your dentist will initially discuss the various types of dental bridges they have available. Furthermore they will perform a dental examination and get some x-rays of your teeth, gums and jaw.

Dental bridges will take several appointments to complete. At the first appointment your dentist will apply anesthetic and file the teeth surrounding the one you will be bridging to create a supportive structure. A dental impression will be taken for lab processing, so the color matches your existing teeth. Your dentist may also place a temporary bridge in the meantime. At the following appointment, you will receive more anesthetic and the permanent bridge will be placed with dental cement. Please contact Cherry Hill Dental Smiles by calling 856-667-3737 today.
